Thanks for the reminder! I did a search and came upon this post from my archives. The subject was refuted by some, deemed worthwhile by others, and then free will vs Calvin became the discussion. Apparently the intended topic was never fully discussed and I have not been able to come to a concrete conclusion on the topic since then.

For now, I look at creation as it was originally intended. That is, all that there is was meant to reflect the glory of God. This reflection has been marred by the sin of man and all of creation will once again reflect this glory. It isn't a statement to be dogmatic about, but I imagine I'll have to chew on it for another few years.

Doug, with the word used there, what does that imply? I could understand why God could love the world, but why would His son be sent for the world?

Have you blogged about this topic already?

I may not have stated it clearly enough. The Greek word for world in John 3:16 is Cosmos (spelling?) but people often refer to the world, not as creation as a whole, but as people groups to the omission of the rest of creation.

Not trying to downplay the atoning work of Christ in people, I wonder sometimes if we let our presuppositions enter into our reading of this text too much. It's not that God doesn't love sinners, but there are ramifications involved if we look only at one part of creation and not at all of creation when we look at this text.

God created all, and it was very good. Man sinned and all was thrown into futility. The earth groans, waiting the day when this futility will finally be past. I just see that Christ came to redeem more than humanity. All of creation is saved through the atoning work of Christ upon His elect.

Romans 8:18-27

Doug, I'm not sure I follow. When you say "the world" are you saying the physical planet?

If so, I think I can see your point, but above I discussed that God didn't use the plural "us" until He created man. To truly express love, more than 1 is necessary. When the world was created, there was no "us" involved, God simply spoke it into existence. I think God's love is implied where it comes to man, but not to the heavens or the earth or even the animals.

Did I misunderstand your point?

Along similar lines, what if a purely literal interpretation was placed on John 3:16? For God so loved... the world. What if the world means the world? Yes, God loves us and will redeem us on the last day. But God also will redeem the world. This is made possible by the death and resurrection of the Lamb who is worthy to break the seals.

So I have pondered for a few years, off and on, if the removal of the curse (which affects all of creation) is evidence that Christ came to redeem all of creation. He did it for His glory. He did it for His bride. He did it because God so loved the world.

Your thoughts?

Excellent post byMichael at Chasing the Wind. Loved this bit: It’s like God is saying, Adam, dude. Pick an animal, any animal, to be your helper.
