Chasing the Wind

News. Faith. Nonsense.

August 1977, Summer of the Boy Scouts

I scanned in a small reel of slides today, from August of 1977. This was a trip to San Marcos, Texas with Boy Scout Troop 479 with my father and brother. Summers were hot, scorpions and tarantulas were common discoveries. Compared to today, those days were relatively safe.

It’s difficult to put descriptions on the photos as many of them are group shots, action shots, or wide scenery shots, but I’ll give it my best shot at a couple of them –

#871. This is a great shot of Steve. As he got older, he found his balance in life and he’s less out of control. 🙂

#875. If I had any idea who this person was, I’d helpfully traumatize him in his adult life. The Boy Scouts of America stressed morally straight behavior. Really.

#878. None of these kids grew up to be engineers.

#879. This must have been the Mile Swim Marathon. A 1/4 mile stretch was marked off and we swam 4 lengths. I remember that upstream was a real beast.

#885. See the ripples in the water? We chunked one kid in as a lesson that we should always wear life vests.

#889. I wish this one was in better focus. Steve looks like he’s in charge of the world.

#891. Appetite Hill. Cruel people put the mess hall at the top of this hill.

#896. Hail, hail, the gang’s all here.

About Me

Michael, a sinner saved by grace, sharing what the good Lord has shared with me.

Solomon, in the book of Ecclesiastes, said, “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

If you’re not living for the glory of God, then what you’re doing is meaningless, no matter what it is. Living for God gives life meaning, and enjoying a “chasing after the wind” is a gift from God. I’m doing what I can to enjoy this gift daily.

Got questions? I’m not surprised. If you have any questions about Chasing the Wind, you can email me at chasingthewind@outlook.com.

    I.             Introduction An old friend once told me a story that every married man understands. His wife tried on a new dress and asked, “Does this dress make me look fat?” He answered with complete honesty. It was true – and it was also unwise. Later he said something I have never forgotten: truth and… Read more: Finding Wisdom

    I.             Icebreaker — Stories of Reconciliation Before we turn to Nehemiah, let me connect us to where we’ve been the past couple of weeks. Two weeks ago, Tommy used home renovation shows—things like Property Brothers—to help us think about rebuilding. That fit Nehemiah well, because Nehemiah quite literally asks the king for permission to rebuild… Read more: Confession, Reconciliation, Celebration

We don’t always stop to think about it, but even something as ordinary as getting to work safely is evidence of God’s care. I.             Introduction Israel had long been warned that disobedience would lead to captivity. Jerusalem fell, many were exiled, and empires changed hands. Daniel not only foretold the rise of Persia—he also lived through the transfer of power as God’s people remained in exile. Esther takes place in the Persian Empire after Babylon fell, when many… Read more: Esther: Queen of the Darkest Night
