Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari appealed to the 26-nation [NATO] alliance Tuesday to provide border security support, military equipment and protection for U.N. personnel as well as training for the army which is now being rebuilt.
“We need this training you promised us in Istanbul to be carried out as soon as possible. We need it, in fact we are in a race against time and it’s a matter of urgency,” Zebari told a news conference after meeting alliance ambassadors.
Iraq is asking for help, and they want more than just troop training for Iraqi soldiers.
Mr. Zebari wants more than just training, though. He says he has asked NATO for military equipment, support in guarding Iraq’s borders and protection for the U.N. mission that is supposed to oversee elections that are scheduled to take place in January.
Who is standing in the way? France, of course. They are likely to use their veto to stop anything that involves any activity inside Iraq, even if the new Iraqi government requests it.
I don’t know France continues to be so obstinate. The war is virtually over, the new Iraqi government is being recognized by the U.N. What could France possibly hope to achive by thwarting efforts for other countries to help with security? Even if France wants to stay home et fromage mis dans des leurs oreilles, it doesn’t make any sense to oppose efforts by other countries to help. What could France hope to achieve now by denying the Iraqi government help? Do they want an unstable Iraq?
