In 1996, [Chief of Naval Operations] Admiral Jeremy Boorda committed suicide after he was accused of wearing medals he hadn’t earned.
At the time, Sen. Kerry told the Boston Herald that the error was “sufficient to question his leadership position.”
“If you wind up being less than what you’re pretending to be, there is a major confrontation with value, self-esteem and your sense of how others view you,” Kerry told the Boston Globe.
This just in: The United State Navy has started an official investigation into John Kerry’s Vietnam medals. Among other issues, the Navy says it has *never* issued a Silver Star with Combat V, but John Kerry’s website say John Kerry has one.
To be fair, the errors may be all “processing errors”. Kerry’s Bronze Star was updated in 1988 and again in 2003 and includes 3 separate citations describing differing reasons for the Bronze Star. One of them may indeed be accurate (although some bloggers have questioned why only Kerry received a Bronze Star that day he pulled a crewmate out of the water, and nobody else).
The problem for Kerry is that even if these are clerical errors by the Navy, Kerry should know they are errors. Instead, Kerry’s running on these medals as qualification for President.
In response, John Kerry criticized VP Cheney’s 5 deferments last night, as though that were somehow important to the reelection of George Bush.
