Chasing the Wind

News. Faith. Nonsense.

Mechanical Investing for October

What a wonderful month for Mechanical Investing – for the first time since sometime in 1999, no losers at all! If I could make 15.8% every month, I’d be able to retire in a couple of years. 🙂

Holding for another month:

Ticker Return
ADSK +15.7% Autodesk Inc.
APA +14.4% Apache Corp. oil & gas.
CCK +9.3% Crown Holdings Inc.
CLF +26.8% Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., producer of iron ore pellets.
NAFC +13.6% Nash Finch Company
RIMM +24.2% Research in Motion. Glad I held it; lost 1.7% last month but more than recovered. I’ll hold a while longer still.

Selling these:

Ticker Return
BMHC +23.3% Building Materials Holding Corp.
MRCY -0.0% Mercury Computer Systems. Ok, technically, I lost my $5 commission. I sold it for the same price I bought it. Close enough. 🙂
OMM +27.5% OMI Corp.
PBR +18.6% Petroleo Brasil. Total return over the 2 months was 38.9%.
PHM +7.4% Pulte Homes.
SMF +8.9% Smart & Final, a California grocery store chain.

New stocks for this month:

Ticker Return
LDG N/A% Long Drug Stores Corp.
NFX N/A% Newfield Exploration Co.
NUE N/A% Nucor Corp.
PKOH N/A% Park Ohio Holdings is back; I sold this back in August for a +55.8% return.
STTX N/A% Steel Technologies Inc.
TIBX N/A% Tibco Software Inc.

In addition, I’m picking up a couple of options; I buy these calls 10% out of the money as far in advance as I can get them and sell them 3 months before they expire:

New options for this month:

Ticker Return
.LSSEH N/A% Lone Star Technologies (May 05 40)
.UICCH N/A% United Industrial Corp (March 05 40)

Next trade will be November 1.

About Me

Michael, a sinner saved by grace, sharing what the good Lord has shared with me.

Solomon, in the book of Ecclesiastes, said, “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

If you’re not living for the glory of God, then what you’re doing is meaningless, no matter what it is. Living for God gives life meaning, and enjoying a “chasing after the wind” is a gift from God. I’m doing what I can to enjoy this gift daily.

Got questions? I’m not surprised. If you have any questions about Chasing the Wind, you can email me at chasingthewind@outlook.com.

      I.      Introduction – The Temple In our class last week, Tommy taught us that we should be prepared for the coming of the Lord.  Well, He’s here.  And here in Luke 2, we get our only inspired snapshot of Jesus between infancy and adulthood.  And we’ll see in just a few short verses something… Read more: The Temple

    I.             Introduction An old friend once told me a story that every married man understands. His wife tried on a new dress and asked, “Does this dress make me look fat?” He answered with complete honesty. It was true – and it was also unwise. Later he said something I have never forgotten: truth and… Read more: Finding Wisdom

    I.             Icebreaker — Stories of Reconciliation Before we turn to Nehemiah, let me connect us to where we’ve been the past couple of weeks. Two weeks ago, Tommy used home renovation shows—things like Property Brothers—to help us think about rebuilding. That fit Nehemiah well, because Nehemiah quite literally asks the king for permission to rebuild… Read more: Confession, Reconciliation, Celebration
  • God Protects Us
                 I.      Introduction We all arrived safely at the office today. Raise your hand if you’re not here. We don’t always stop to think about it, but even something as ordinary as getting to work safely is evidence of God’s care. Scripture reminds us that our steps are ordered by the Lord, and His protection… Read more: God Protects Us
