Chasing the Wind

News. Faith. Nonsense.

Substance Versus Style

Uptown Girl made a good observation this morning about John Kerry’s multiple personality disorder:

He seems to have a different “personality” for every group he speaks to.

For instance his recent interview with Tom Brokaw he was “Serious Senator Kerry” – – on stage with Springsteen he was “Drink A Lot Of Beer Kerry” – – when he tries to play sports he is “Punish Sporting Equipment Kerry” and during the debates he was “A Lot Of Hooey Kerry”.

He’s kind of like Barbie without the great style and fashion sense.

For Uptown Girl’s effort, some left winger is advising her to “spend less time blogging and more time scouring the internet for information about the men seeking to hold public office in this country.” Is that a patronizing thing to say to a woman? Of course it is. But isn’t the left supposed to be supportive of empowering women? Of course they are, unless the women don’t hold leftist ideals. Then it’s ok to tell the little ladies to get back in the kitchen. Us men are hungry.

Why does the Left like Kerry? I’m convinced it’s precisely *because* Kerry panders for the vote. Whatever you want, Kerry will say it. For or against the war in Iraq? Kerry is on your side. Sacred unborn life vs. abortion? Kerry is on your side, too. Religion vs separation? Kerry is on your side, whatever your side is.

Case in point – Kerry does a goose hunting photo op, he’s shown in fatigues (oddly, no mud on his fatigues), dragging a goose behind him. (October 21, 2004, in Springfield Township, Ohio, Kerry says, “One. We all got one.”) PETA objects, and the next day shows up to heckle Kerry in Florida. PETA chants, “Goose killer! Goose killer!” and Kerry says, “I missed.” Kerry’s pandering to both huntsmen and PETA at the same time.

And I think the Left actually likes that, because when Kerry takes a turn and speaks to their particular special interest, they know Kerry is on their side, whatever it is. The Left has a preference of style over substance – it doesn’t matter what you say as long as you look good saying it. The PETA people will fall for the “I didn’t shoot it” line every time. The huntsmen won’t.

Bush doesn’t have separate personalities; he is all substance. I’m convinced that’s why the left hates him. Bush won’t pander to them like Kerry does. Bush looks at the issues and decides what is right, and then you can’t budge him with a crowbar. Bush is for the lives of the unborn, the right to bear arms, that faith plays a daily part in his decision making, and that a goose would taste good with cranberry sauce.

About Me

Michael, a sinner saved by grace, sharing what the good Lord has shared with me.

Solomon, in the book of Ecclesiastes, said, “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

If you’re not living for the glory of God, then what you’re doing is meaningless, no matter what it is. Living for God gives life meaning, and enjoying a “chasing after the wind” is a gift from God. I’m doing what I can to enjoy this gift daily.

Got questions? I’m not surprised. If you have any questions about Chasing the Wind, you can email me at chasingthewind@outlook.com.
