Psalms, Irish bogs, Protestants and Israel

Yesterday, the news reports that medieval copy of the partial Psalms was found in an Irish bog.

Interestingly, :

“The book was found open to a page describing, in Latin script, Psalm 83, in which God hears complaints of other nations’ attempts to wipe out the name of Israel.” – (hat tip Atlasshrugs)

Lets read that and learn something….. Psalm 83.

But wait – that’s not right. Psalm 83 is not what they are talking about….. Hmmm.

Thinking, thinking…..

Oh, this explains it.

Protestants. Now why would they be running around 500 years before Luther, re-numbering this little book of Latin Psalms and adding all that flowery language? I mean the copyist who wrote it was obviously Catholic, as there was no other Christian choice available at the time. But the MSM references a Protestant source. Confuses me. Maybe Seamus the scribe was a good Catholic, but a dyslexic and changed the numbers? Maybe the MSM made it all up?

Just goes to show you – don’t believe everything you find on the web – like Protestant Bible references to an obviously Catholic work.

Here’s what they really found – Psalm 82 (latin included)

The interesting thing to me in all this is a deeper question – Why are the numberings different in the two Bibles. (Bonus Points is you can spell Proto-Canonical).

It’s still pretty inspiring to think of Israel’s history, however, be it Psalm 82 or 83. I’m sure that they’ll do just fine in their current trials.

    Excellent observation on your part!! As an Irish-American I am always fascinated at bog findings and was thrilled at this one.

    Maybe the book is simply not as old as they think? That would be my guess anyway. It sounds like there is a LOT of research to be done yet, so who knows what they will come up with in the end.

    On your previous post, hogwash! I don’t believe there is a decline at all.

    Ah, you would be referring to Michael’s post listed below. I am merely a guest blogger while Mike is on Hiatus. However I did post some numbers on the supposed “decline” in “Protestants”. Lemme see if I can find it here somewhere.

    Ah, apologies.

    I, being a guest do not know how to reclaim lost comments. Suffice it to say that I agree with you. The protestant churches are growing, mainly the conservative ones not hit with recent problems over homosexual pastors, gay marriage, etc. For the same reason, the Catholic church is also growing, and if my memory serves, it claims most of the growth members on a numerical basis in the US. Europe, not so sure. I’ll ask Mike to remind me how to find that infomation if you are interested.
