Columnist Mark Brown isn’t entirely convinced. But at least he’s asking the right questions:

But after watching Sunday’s election in Iraq and seeing the first clear sign that freedom really may mean something to the Iraqi people, you have to be asking yourself: What if it turns out Bush was right, and we were wrong?
Certainly a good question to ask. Nothing wrong with re-evaluating your position in the face of new evidence.
I’ve posted here on Chasing the Wind that of course the Iraq War was a bad thing. A terrible thing. Was is ugly. People die.
But not going to war was worse. Estimates of maybe 300,000 Iraqis dead under Saddam Hussein. Torture was routine.
Not enough? Another 500,000 Iraqis died in the war against Iran. Ya know, when you’re approaching a million people killed under a single dictator, perhaps you ought to consider, you know, asking him to stop. Politely. And use tanks, if you must.
A couple of years after launching a war again Saddam, we see Iraqis celebrating in the streets with their purple stained election finger, and people who opposed the war can either a) condemn the Iraqis for celebrating the election, or b) question whether perhaps Bush was right all along.
If it turns out Bush was right all along, this is going to require some serious penance.
Maybe I’d have to vote Republican in 2008.
