Tasty Surprise at the Cafe

My workplace has a cafeteria downstairs that served decent food, but over the weekend the old crew cleared out and new management took over. It’s not a cafeteria anymore; it’s a full blown cafe.

Before, available breakfast was bagels or pancakes or scrambled eggs out of powder. This morning, a chef was making omelettes out of egg whites with peppers, broccoli and onions. And I’ve never seen such a choice of fruits – bananas, apples, pears, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, plums, canteloupe, honeydew melon, watermelon. I just wanted coffee because my sweet wife had already prepared me a healthy blueberry and yogurt dish this morning.

I picked up a menu; gone is the old deli lunch station and the cheeseburger station. Now they have:

  • An “Exhibition” station (today for lunch will be pad thai with spring roll and dipping sauce);
  • An Italian station (chicken asparagus roasted pepper eppie roll);
  • A deli station (flank steak with bleu cheese and carmelized onion panini);
  • An entree station (peppercorn crusted NY strip steak)
  • A grill station (Roasted stuffed pork loin with risotto alla robusto
  • A “Balanced Choice” station (apricot and ginger glazed salmon filet);
  • A “Wild Greens” salad station (Grilled tuna steak with sweet tomato salsa);
  • An International station (Lamb gyro with hummus, baklava and spanikopita.
  • A Soup station from Au Bon Pain (chicken florentine or French onion).

The price ranges from $3.99 to $5.99. And it appears the menu will change daily – there’s some maple mustard tenderloin with carmelized apples at the Balanced Choice station tomorrow that sounds good.

First impression: wow.
