State of Cindy's Delusion

You probably know Cindy Sheehan was arrested and removed before the President’s State of the Union address last night. That wasn’t really a surprise – the surprise to me was that a U.S. Representative, Lynn Woolsey, gave her a ticket. Sometimes the Left is really… Left, you know? Cindy was removed by Capital Police because, well, because it wasn’t a State of Cindy speech last night.

Cindy’s posted about her experience on Michael Moore’s website. I’m going to nitpick only a couple of pieces in it:

At that time, I was wearing the shirt that said: 2,245 Dead. How many more?

I had just sat down and I was warm from climbing 3 flights of stairs back up from the bathroom so I unzipped my jacket. I turned to the right to take my left arm out, when the same officer saw my shirt and yelled, “Protester.”

I wore the shirt to make a statement. The press knew I was going to be there and I thought every once in awhile they would show me and I would have the shirt on.

These snippets show she still doesn’t understand why she was escorted out. The show wasn’t about her. The wife of Republican Representative C.W. Bill Young was also escorted out for wearing a t-shirt supporting the troops. I remember a man being escorted out during one of Bill Clinton’s State of the Union speeches. The President is required by the US Constitution to tell Congress about the State of the Union every year. It’s all about the President on that night.

I have lost my First Amendment rights.
[…]
I have some lawyers looking into filing a First Amendment lawsuit against the government for what happened tonight.
[…]
I don’t want to live in a country that prohibits any person, whether he/she has paid the ultimate price for that country, from wearing, saying, writing, or telephoning any negative statements about the government.

I think a lawyer would have a hard time proving that her First Amendment rights are being violated, especially when she’s posted everything she wanted to say the very next day. The fact that she can’t say it there and that particular time and be disruptive at a Presidential event is supported by a Supreme Court ruling placing a “reasonable time, place or manner” restriction on speech.

Read some of her ranting. Does she sound oppressed to you?

Though Capital police have apologized to both Cindy and Beverly Young, it was just disrepectful to wear ‘message’ t-shirts to the SOTU address. Period.

Unfortunately, Cindy’s in her own little distorted world.

Ms. Sheehan’s shirt would have been the only flicker of truth in the capitol last night, but the flame was quenched by some of Bush’s henchmen.

How dare you filthy conservatives denegrade a woman who lost her son in Bush’s illegal invasion!

1 – I believe Bush’s speech to be a source of truth.
2 – They were Capital Police who do not work for Bush.
3 – She’s one of 2245 mothers, according to her t-shirt. Most of the other 2244 mothers honor their sons memory and support Bush. I have family in Iraq, too, and I support his Iraq policy.
4 – I have a shower twice a day, depending on my workout schedule, so there’s little filth on me.

Cindy Sheehan was ARRESTED for wearing her shirt to the SOTU address. Ms. Young was only escorted out. They were not treated the same. It is clear that neither should have been escorted out in the first place because neither did anything wrong. When did it become disrespectful to express an opinon in this country? Even the chief of police said that his officers acted in good faith but misunderstood the law and should not have removed or arrested either woman.

The SOTU is hardly a representation of the truth. Ever since the advent of broadcast media it has been a purely poltical event. Anyone who says otherwise is either a liar or delusional.

The person who claims to remember a man being escorted out of one of Clinton’s SOTUs needs to get his memory checked. It never happened. You are remembering the man who was escorted out during the Clinton Impeachment trial and he had an obscenty written on his shirt. That was a bird of a different plumage.

Capital police explained that Beverly Young was threatened with arrest but left voluntarily. Implications are that Cindy Sheehan did not. Regardless, charges against Sheehan will be dropped, and Capital police will clarify rules that simply wearing a t-shirt does not constitute a protest during the State of the Union speeches.

I stand by my statement that State of the Union speeches are a representation of the truth. Both Republican and Democratic Presidents have given truthful facts to the best of their ability. Spin, however, is another story. I make that statement without acknowledging that I’m either a liar or delusional, thank you very much.

A Pennsylvania man named Dave Delp was removed by Capital police from the Senate gallery during Clinton’s impeachment trial in January 1999 for wearing a t-shirt that said, “Clinton doesn’t inhale, he sucks.” I stand corrected.

It’s not disrepectful to express an opinion, unless one resorts to a personal attack such as “liar or delusional.” However, there is a time and a place to express one’s opinion, and the State of the Union is reserved for the opinion of the President.
