CBS and Dan Rather stands by their story, claiming the faked Col. Killian documents they showed on 60 Minutes are real. CBS also denies any internal investigation is underway.
This report was not based solely on recovered documents, but rather on a preponderance of evidence, including documents that were provided by unimpeachable sources, interviews with former Texas National Guard officials and individuals who worked closely back in the early 1970s with Colonel Jerry Killian and were well acquainted with his procedures, his character and his thinking.
In other words, “The same people that faked these memos also told us they’re real. We believe them.” Now that is ego! You go, CBS!
Col. Killian’s wife and son also say the memos are fake, that Killian didn’t keep personal files, couldn’t type, and would never type CYA memos to himself. They also claim that’s not Killian’s signature on the memos.
Anybody over the age of 40 that ever used a typewriter can glance at those memos and know they are fakes. Proportional spacing, kerning, perfect centering, superscript, and Times Roman font were not available on office typewriters in 1972. Only the proportional font was available on high-end $20,000 word processors – and it’s unlikely a military man would have one to just to type memos to himself when he can’t type.
I’m amazed CBS is sticking by the story. Look again at the four memos and tell me that this is possible to do on a typewriter.
