Erin recently stopped by to visit to comment on a post I made this summer on John Kerry’s hypocritical stance on abortion. She volunteers at a Crisis Pregnancy Center and sees firsthand some of the issues women face.
I thought I’d do a little research into the reasons women get abortions. According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, 49% of pregnancies among American women are unintended; 1/2 of these are terminated by abortion. 47% of these occur among the 7% of women who do not practice contraception. In 2000, that added up to 1.3 million abortions. The top 3 reasons given by women who had abortions are:
- A baby would interfere with work, school, or other responsibilities (75%);
- The woman could not afford to have a child (66%);
- Did not want to be a single parent or having troubles with their husband or partner (50%).
There are overlaps between those categories, but at a minimum, 75% of all abortions are for convenience.
Here is my top three reasons for not having an abortion:
- They become children.
Actually, I guess I only have one reason.
