Bark Park

Patch & I went for a little outing this morning. He knew I was heading out as I was putting on my tennis shoes; as I headed downstairs, Patch raced ahead and checked the hall coat closet to see if I was getting a leash.

Puppy joy! Not just any leash, but the short brown leash! That means a car ride! Patch doesn’t bother waiting for me – quick as a flash, out through the kitchen, through his doggy door that he figured out quickly with, um, a little push. Patch is headed for the car.

We left for a new park that opened recently, the Mille Bush Bark Park, named after George Bush the Elder’s dog. There’s a double gated entrance, doggy showers, doggy water fountains, two large ponds, and complimentary “dang, I have to pick that up?” bags.

I was a little nervous as I took off Patch’s leash, but all the other dogs were unleased. Ok, here we go…. *unclick* and Patch took off like a shot. Zooom! Patch chased everything that moved. Somebody would throw a ball, Patch would chase the ball, chase the dog chasing the ball, chase other dogs chasing the dog chasing the ball… for the next hour, I probably got no closer than 100 yards to Patch.

After two solid hours of running, Patch started to wear. After a couple of scruffles, I decided it was time to start preparing to leave. He ran through the muddy ponds, chest high, so I took advantage ot the doggy shower and rinsed him off, then headed over to a bench to wait while he dried. I kept him leashed; I didn’t want him to run back through the pond.

Patch needed a nap. He growled at every dog that came within 10 feet of him, as if to say, “What are you doing in my park! Grrr..” I brought him home, gave him a thorough bath, and now he’s passed out under my desk.

He really liked Bark Park. 🙂

  1. I’m trying to get Patch to recognize the words “Bark Park” so he’ll get excited. He already gets excited at pizza, walk, ice cube, car ride, pig ear, and “go see Alex”.
