Pope Benedict XVI Annoys Liberals

What amazes me about all the news stories concerning the theology of Pope Benedict XVI is how unhappy they are with the selection. The Pope won’t be approving gay marriage or abortion, and that seems to annoy the liberals.

Yesterday, the liberal media pointed out that the new Pope was once part of the Nazi youth party.

Today, as Sean pointed out in an email to me, the more scary words in a news article the better. Chack out the scary words in today’s Arch-Conservative German Ratzinger Elected Pope Reuters story: arch-conservative (there are never any arch-liberals for some reason)…surprise choice… stunned moderates… strict orthodox legacy… reject changes… raising fears…divisions will widen… oldest man…. tough doctrinal watchdog… too divisive… too old…. greeted with consternation… election is a catastrophe… people will turn their back on the church… dismayed liberal Catholics… celebrations were tempered by fear of widening divisions… historic but sad moment… condemn, condemn, condemn…. stern warning…

Whew. Sounds to me like the Cardinals made the right choice if all the liberals detest him so.

  1. All this supposed “controvery” just amazes me. Imagine, they chose a Pope who believes in supporting Church doctrine. Isn’t that pretty much the POINT?

  2. Indeed. OpinionJournal had the best question regarding the “controversy” this morning from a reader named Roger Gore:

I am not Catholic, but it seems to me that if the pope is really God’s mouthpiece on the earth–as the Catholic Church claims he is–then why the dissent? Either the man speaks for God, or he does not. If he does, the dissent is at best foolish, for who in his right mind would think to argue with Almighty God over his own doctrine? Can God really be lobbied, swayed, and convinced over same-sex marriage, condoms, celibacy, etc.? If the pope does not speak for God, then the Catholic Church is void of its stated “divine authority,” and so why have a pope to begin with?
