Phone Oddity

I've had this phone problem for a while, but only recently got motivated enough to fix it. If you dial my home phone number, it rings 3 times and then rolls over to SBC Call Notes, an automated answering service. You hear my voice saying, "Hi, this is Michael..." If you hang up and immediately … Continue reading Phone Oddity

Deer Lease Available

My friend Ryszard has 5 openings on a deer lease. I expect there aren't a whole lot of Texas hunters that stop by Chasing the Wind, but you never know. Drop a comment and fill in your email address if you're interested and I'll see that he gets the message: Howdy! Hope your hunting season … Continue reading Deer Lease Available

Renewed Request for Prayer

After Hayden's miraculous recovery, she has stalled in her recovery. Her father and grandfather are asking anew for your prayers. Hello, There was a meeting with Hospital staff and family on Friday. Four physicians were present. The two most senior were the main pediatrician and the pediatric neurologist. The other two were not very active … Continue reading Renewed Request for Prayer

Blood Pressure

After my teensy weensy salad for lunch, I stopped by the automatic blood pressure machine. I stepped up on the pad, placed my arm in the cuff. The automated voice said, "Press the blue button that best describes your height in shoes." I picked 6' 2", even though I'm shrinking as I get older. I … Continue reading Blood Pressure

Stream of Consciousness

If my train of thought leaves Chicago at 35 miles per hour.... What am I doing? Oh, nothing. Thanks for asking. I was just reflecting on how much I enjoy having this website and all the visitors that leave comments, but some days I just don't feel like diving into the topic du juor. Al … Continue reading Stream of Consciousness

Dirt Free

Bleh. Carpets are still wet this morning. So much for that "oh, an hour or two and they'll be dry." Dirt Free Carpets did a decent job, but it's obvious how they make they're money. Their $99 special can easily cost hundreds of dollars. Every time you sneeze, they tack on $70 to clean that … Continue reading Dirt Free

Hayden's Improving

Hayden is making remarkable progress. John's email needs no explanation: Dear Family and Friends, I returned from a three day trip late yesterday. It is hard to focus under the current situation, but things went well. As soon as posable I drove to the hospital. Hayden has a very large room now and a new … Continue reading Hayden's Improving

I'm Forty-Three

Sung to the tune of "Yesterday" : I'm forty three there are pieces falling off of me now I'm twice as old as I used to be I can't believe I'm forty three. Why I huff and puff climbing hills I couldn't say At least my memory's intact I... what was I going to say … Continue reading I'm Forty-Three

Puppy Power

Busy today. Lots of things going on lately, not much of it bloggable if that's a word. At least not bloggable yet. And I'm busy at work this week, so posting at lunch is hard, too. I don't want you to feel like you visited today and left empty handed today, though. Here's a picture … Continue reading Puppy Power

Getting the Last Laugh

My brother-in-law writes a weekly column for the Kerrville Daily Time... at least, I *think* it's a weekly column. The Kerrville newspaper uses some odd url's to post the article, so I suspect only 3 people a week can find Joe's article online. And I'm not one of them. Joe and I have similar writing … Continue reading Getting the Last Laugh

Hayden Update for Sunday

Hayden's family and the hospital have put up a website where you can leave messages directly to Hayden and the family in the room. It's free, but it does require you to create a username and password to view and post. I highly encourage you to post your prayers and well wishes there: http://www.tlcontact.com/ServeCarePage?cpn=Haydens411 Update: … Continue reading Hayden Update for Sunday

Hayden Update for Friday

Dear Family and Friends, Her chart read, "Eminent Brain Death." As in all terminal cases, the limits they put on visitation was lifted. It was a very sad situation. I spent last night in the room with Hayden. Her recovery is continuing slowly. The doctors have no explanation. She began with a very week cry … Continue reading Hayden Update for Friday

God Called Last Night

I got a phone call last night from one of God's messengers. He told me it was time to go back to church. Even told me which church. Again. He's told me before, using messengers of ever-increasing impact. The last time was just last month when my next door neighbor asked me to go. I … Continue reading God Called Last Night

Hayden Update

John has emailed Hayden's status the last couple of day, and it hasn't looked good. A brain scan on Tuesday showed almost no activity, and Tuesday night the doctors took Hayden off of life support. Doctors planned on keeping her as comfortable as they could and wait for the end. John called just now, two … Continue reading Hayden Update

One Day at a Time

I never intended to blog politically, but that's sort of the way it turned out over the last few months. I guess that's normal, given the elections. As I get older, I get more opinionated. I read many of my favorite blogs the last couple of days; some are gloating, others are purposefully not gloating. … Continue reading One Day at a Time

Prayer Request for Hayden

I spent the afternoon with my good friend John at the Texas Children's Hospital where John and his son are spending 18 hours a day this past week. The doctors have exhausted the types of medicines … Continue reading Prayer Request for Hayden

Flu Shots

My company is once again offering flu shots. First they offered it to everybody, then only restricted people, now I don't know. Just a big arrow pointing down a hallway saying "FLU SHOTS". I must have missed a memo someplace along the way. When did flu shots get to be a big thing? I've *never* … Continue reading Flu Shots

Fall Weather

According to that weather thingy on the left (or on the right, depending on which skin you're using) the temperature is only 73°F. At 100% humidity. Man, it felt like I was living in a Vietnamese Noodle Soup this morning. Without the noodles, of course. Or that weird meat they use. How am I supposed … Continue reading Fall Weather

Pop Quiz: The Battery

I am going to Huntsville today (4 hour round trip) to change a car battery because: A) I don't have a battery locally that I can change; B) There is a battery changing festival in Huntsville; C) My son has run out of clean underwear; D) I want to listen to 4 hours of country … Continue reading Pop Quiz: The Battery

Random Conversations

Scene: Cafeteria, getting coffee. Woman near the cream and sugar, talking to her friend. Both strangers to me. Woman is somewhat on the largish side. Woman: ... not until I decide what I'm going to do. After all, everybody knows the world revolves around me. Weekend Getaway Over

I had a good time at my sisters this weekend along with her husband and daughter. Among the many accomplishments - - Saw "Vanity Fair" except for about 10 minutes where the sound disappeared; - My sister challenged me that I couldn't pet her cat, and if I could, she'd give me a shiny nickel. … Continue reading Weekend Getaway Over

The Spring Has Sprung

On the garage door, that is. The release latch doesn't seem to actually release anything, so I'm stuck inside. I tried to look up a repair place on Superpages.com; what a waste of time that was. Good thing I still have old paper yellow pages. They should be here by 10:00am. In the meantime, I'm … Continue reading The Spring Has Sprung

Go to Sleep, Patch

No, Patch, I don't want to go for a walk. I hear your little whines, I'm not getting up. I wish you'd settle down; you keep running to the back patio, then jumping on the bed, giving a little whine, running back outside again. You've been doing this all day. Yes, I know the dog … Continue reading Go to Sleep, Patch

Lost Lions and Ambush Dining

Ok, I'm evil. I really, really, try to be good. In fact, I think a cornerstone of my faith depends on it. But every once in a while I get this idea... Relaxing Weekend, Back to Work

That was my first 3-day weekend since June. I'd almost forgotten how much I enjoyed my 3-day weekends every other week. Friday was a day of nothing; puttered around the house, read blogs, played some Ultima Online, and waited for Alex to show up so we could catch "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow." … Continue reading Relaxing Weekend, Back to Work

Chernobyl and the Weekend

The Bleat, as usual, was excellent today. He turned his daughter's playhouse into Chernobyl. Go read it now or I shall taunt you unmercifully. I shall taunt Sean twice and include snide comments like, "Oh, so you were home schooled? I couldn't tell." I'm waiting for Alex to magically appear from college. He'll either want … Continue reading Chernobyl and the Weekend

It Makes Me Nauseous

There's a industrial strength pencil sharpener over the wall in the next cubicle. When the draftsman, er... draftswoman uses it, the display on my monitor goes all wonky. A warped, vibrating display. Makes me queasy. If the sharpening noises would just start a split second earlier, I could learn to look away for those 5 … Continue reading It Makes Me Nauseous

Oops. I Stepped In It.

This story has been bothering me for a week. Yesterday it finally dawned on me why it bothered me, so this morning I did something about it. It basically comes down to there's something between Steve and Tamara, and I don't know the truth. And I really don't want to. But if a) Steve's telling … Continue reading Oops. I Stepped In It.

My Sister-in-Law is So Cool

I'm alone. My son has moved to college. It's just me puttering around in a huge townhome. And the dog. I take him for a walk. I bought some Bermuda shorts and some black socks just to walk him around. And my sister-in-law BAKED ME SOME COOKIES! The postman delivered a package of her homemade … Continue reading My Sister-in-Law is So Cool

The Siren Song of the Nutella

I went grocery shopping over the weekend. First time I've had to do that in a while; I had assigned that chore to Alex. Teenager, fetch me some groceries. There, next to the peanut butter, was Nutella. I had been warned that this stuff was addicting. Sinful. Irresistible. Jo sang the Nutella siren song a … Continue reading The Siren Song of the Nutella

Close to Home

Early this morning, a co-worker was struck by a drunk driver on his way to work. Hardy Carrow died 2 hours later at the hospital. I barely knew Hardy - this is a large office complex - but when I saw him, he always had a smile on his face. He was a good friend … Continue reading Close to Home

Hurricane Alex Just Blew Through

My son dropped in yesterday afternoon. I didn't raise no dummy - he had 3 loads of laundry that cost 75 cents each. He'll spend $10 in gas to save 75 cents - but it's my credit card paying for gas. Heh. I don't mind; I thought he grew up quickly when he was young, … Continue reading Hurricane Alex Just Blew Through

Michael Swears Off Dating Again

I mentioned a few months ago that's I've mostly given up dating. For my mental health, I tell myself. Maybe once a year I'll try a date or two, then give it up again. Sometimes I think about going to the gym and working out in order to impress women, but hey, that's why I … Continue reading Michael Swears Off Dating Again

Workout Slippers

Last night's workout was cancelled due to equipment failure. I had been using my tennis shoes, but over the weekend decided to get my old racquetball shoes out of the closet to use as my gym sneaks. I put them into the gym bag and headed to work. After work at the gym, I started … Continue reading Workout Slippers

Busy Week Ahead

I have all day meetings Monday and Tuesday and some tight deadlines to meet at work this week. Postings will be slim till the end of the week. Currently we're up to about 300 Democratic loonies arrested in New York. I'm predicting a thousand before the end of the week.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

I tried calling my new collegiate college son on Wednesday night to see how his first day of classes went. No answer on his dorm phone. I sent him an email, too, telling him I had emailed his Bearkat card. I can only assume he got the email; he didn't reply. I tried calling again … Continue reading Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Years of Memories, One Piece of Trash at a Time

After taking Alex to college, I resolved to clean his room. It's full of typical teenage junk he's collected over the years, but mostly with his door shut, I haven't looked at it in years. Alex knew this was coming; he took the stuff that was important to him, and I promised to store memories … Continue reading Years of Memories, One Piece of Trash at a Time

My Spare Time is Gonna Kill Me

Dang it's quiet here without the noisy pitter patter of... huge teenage shoes. I'm going to have to fill this time with something worthwhile or I'll go bonkers. And I am *not* bonkers yet, wiseguy. I'm back at the gym for the first time in years. I really had no excuse, other than I'd rather … Continue reading My Spare Time is Gonna Kill Me

Open Carefully

On the second floor of my office, I found a Dasani vending machine. It dispenses bottled water. On the front is a big sign that says, "OPEN BOTTLE CAREFULLY." That's important safety information for consumers. Are you aware of how dangerous that liquid is? If one part oxygen, a highly flammable gas, isn't enough, it … Continue reading Open Carefully

Zipper Troubles

For the last couple of weeks, I've been startled to find my zipper is down at work. I'll notice it 30 minutes after a visit to the restroom and wonder if anybody else noticed it. This morning after arriving to work, I went to the cafeteria to get a quick breakfast. After finishing, I stood … Continue reading Zipper Troubles

Twas the Night After College

They come back, don't they? My son and I left early for Sam Houston State. There were lots of errands to do; old dad was huffin' and puffin' emptying both cars. College teens were whistling while carrying 200 lb trunks on their shoulders; I'm dragging a suitcase. With wheels. Then a trip over to the … Continue reading Twas the Night After College

Twas the Night Before College

I took my son out to his grandmother's for brunch this morning; sort of a send-off for him as he heads off o college for the first time. He's sort of getting organized, but not very quickly. I'm starting to wonder if he's going to finish packing today. 😛 We leave at 7:00am in two … Continue reading Twas the Night Before College

So Quiet You Can Hear a Pin Drop

I'm not my usual vocal self. It's not that I don't have things to say, it's just that I don't have much time to say it. I'm working a lot of overtime - yay, that's a good thing, I think I paid for my son's room and board in the last month alone. The O.T. … Continue reading So Quiet You Can Hear a Pin Drop

Patch Needs a Walker

Do they make walkers for dogs? Patch needs something to help him get around. Alex noticed Patch was limping a little last night; I said we'll just watch to see if it gets worse. This morning, it's much worse. He's limping on all four legs. If there was a way to limp with is neck … Continue reading Patch Needs a Walker

Bark Park

Patch & I went for a little outing this morning. Dancin' Donna, The Next Day

I had fun last night. We danced for about 3 hours, though I had an impression ahead of time that she was an excellent dancer. I'd say "enthusiastic" dancer would better describe her, and she was quick learner. By the end of the night I was able to lead her through some spins. I had … Continue reading Dancin' Donna, The Next Day

Dancin' Donna

I met a woman, Donna, at Patty's wedding over a month ago; somebody told her I could dance. She asked me if that was true. I don't know how to answer that question. Compared to what? Compared to a gorilla? Yeah, compared to a gorilla I dance well. Compared to Fred Astaire? Yes, compared to … Continue reading Dancin' Donna

Vending Machine Wars, Part III

First they forced me to buy sunflower seeds against my will. Then they developed chemical weapons and forced me to buy pink sissy lemonade. Today, though, I declare a victory in the battle against vending machines! The Coke machine here is an odd one - it has a clear glass front with faux icicles to … Continue reading Vending Machine Wars, Part III

Cutting Another String

Today is a big day - my son is heading off to a 2 day college orientation. Alone. Without me. ARE YOU CRAZY MICHAEL HE'S NOT OLD ENOUGH!!! Apparently, sometime over the last 18 years he grew up. I have thousands of memories with him, but in almost all of them he's someplace between the … Continue reading Cutting Another String

Family Photos: 1963-1965

I spent the weekend scanning and scanning and scanning; this time, the slides I converted cover 1963-1965. As you can see, my sister was a *lot* more enthusiastic about having her picture taken than I was. Here's the new slides this weekend: 1963 4th Qtr - Kittery Maine 1964 1st Qtr 1964 2nd Qtr - … Continue reading Family Photos: 1963-1965

Patch & His New Doggy Door

First off, I feel silly calling it a "doggy door." I don't call Patch a "doggy," so why should I call the door something so silly sounding? I'm considering calling it the "Door of Doom for the Viscious 15 lb Canine." That sounds a lot more grown-up, though it doesn't roll off the tongue so … Continue reading Patch & His New Doggy Door

Lost Lions

For some reason, Jo's recollection of Lost Lions is different than mine - she launches into a discussion of high-tech ammunitions, chemical peels, masks, arsenals of special soaps... I thought she was recovering from a terrorist attack. Really, Jo, it wasn't *that* bad. 🙂 And hey, before I forget, tomorrow's Jo's birthday. Go make her … Continue reading Lost Lions

Operation "King of the Forest"

"Your mission, Jim Michael, should you choose to accept it..." No, I haven't called (and no, this wasn't a dream). Even I, suave and debonaire Michael, have no idea what I would say if I called. Help me out here. "Hi, my name is Michael and ... " Here's a bad example: "Hi, my name … Continue reading Operation "King of the Forest"

King of the Forest

I have to get my car inspected, but that has almost nothing to do with the story. Like a good little taxpayer, I reregistered both cars - my Maxima and my son's Aurora. He's heading off to college next month and I've been trying to do last minute training at turning him into a full-fledged … Continue reading King of the Forest

Fruit for Breakfast

I asked a co-worker this morning how things were going. That's a meaningless phrase, now that I think about it. What things? Where are they going? His answer: things were just peachy. And I realized that didn't answer the question. Peachy isn't a destination. "Where are you going? Peachy?" I asked him if there were … Continue reading Fruit for Breakfast

Conversation in a Cafeteria

This morning. Cook: What you like? Me: Two eggs, slice of cheese. Cook puts 2 eggs and sausage in the to-go box. Me: I don't want any sausage. Cook dumps everything out, starts over. College Orientation

I signed my son and me up for orientation at Sam Houston State University this week. It's a 2-day overnight trip, Thursday & Friday. When I read the agenda, they separate us within the first 30 minutes and I don't see my son again until the orientation is over. There's no agenda for what they … Continue reading College Orientation

Kris's Older Sister

Last night's dream was in a movie theater. Or a swimming pool. Or maybe a movie theater in a swimming pool. I'm not really sure. There was a girl in high school, Kris. I barely knew her, haven't thought about her since 1980. All I remember about her is that she had red hair. She had an older sister. I didn't know her at all. And *that's* who I was seeing the movie with last night. So Kris's older sister - call me. We should talk. 😛 P.S. There were also tornadoes and wine bottle in the dream. I'm so confused.

Brender and Eddie

I dream vividly - often the dreams fade quicky, so don't try to ask me after I get to work what I dreamed last night. And by vividly, I don't mean bright colors, I mean an entire movie. Last night's movie included a soundtrack, and I scratched out the outline of the dream when I … Continue reading Brender and Eddie

Vote Democrat

Dear Voters: Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak my mind. I lost my job this past year. When Clinton was president, I worked in a prosperous enterprise. But in the last year, we had to close our operations. Far worse, I lost two of my sons in Bush's evil war in Iraq. … Continue reading Vote Democrat

Once A Year

I try to have a date once a year, whether I need one or not. :/ Actually, most of the time I don't miss dating - for somebody that always wanted to be "happily ever after," I seem to have spent most of my life as "single father." Most days now the "what-ifs" are far, … Continue reading Once A Year

Now They Have Chemical Weapons

Vending machines are evil. One vending machine forced me to buy sunflower seeds, even though I don't like sunflower seeds. The secretary still thinks I've lost it, and I still don't want to talk about it. Another time a vending machine forced me to buy pink lemonade Snapple, and I hate pink lemondade Snapple. Happy Birthday, Mom

I've known Mom since I was very young.... er.... Bro and Sis are too far … Continue reading Happy Birthday, Mom

The Path Less Taken

Why do people come to Chasing the Wind? What answers are they seeking? What pheromone drives them buggy? I dunno why, though I suspect it's the pretty colors. So subdued, … Continue reading The Path Less Taken

August 1977, Summer of the Boy Scouts

I scanned in a small reel of slides today, from August of 1977. This was a trip to San Marcos, Texas with Boy Scout Troop 479 with my father and brother. Summers were hot, scorpions and tarantulas were common discoveries. Compared to today, those days were relatively safe. It's difficult to put descriptions on the photos … Continue reading August 1977, Summer of the Boy Scouts

My Groucho Marx Impersonation at 6 months old!

I think I'm getting slower at this - I scanned another 100 family photos today, and it took 8 hours instead of my normal 6. I also took not 1 but 2 naps I took while scanning, but I'm sure … Continue reading My Groucho Marx Impersonation at 6 months old!

It started off as a Do-Something weekend, but the rain killed off all the plans. Mom's Day Weekend Recap..

Great weekend. "Babysat" my brother-in-law Saturday morning and took him out for "ice cream" later. (Euphemisms for "golf" and "a pitcher of Shiner Bock"). Vending machine drama

Ok, so one day last week, I stuck 65 cents into the machine to buy a bag of M&M's, which whirled and twirled and left the M&M's dangling from the shelf. Grr. So I put some more money in - I'll buy a bag for next week, I think. The machine whirls and twirls, the … Continue reading Vending machine drama

Thank you thank you, I'll be here till Tuesday. Try the veal.

I was on one of those roller-coaster highs yesterday. Don't know why; might have been as simple as a good night's sleep. Whatever it was, yakked all day, told goofy jokes, sang that cow song that got stuck in my head, kept it up nonstop all day. Put a new MasterCard/Visa logo on my website. … Continue reading Thank you thank you, I'll be here till Tuesday. Try the veal.
